This week’s Spotlight features two new movies on circuit — one giving the backstory of a famous Champagne dynasty, and the other depicting chaos on a dangerous planet. Also, don’t miss a topical documentary series about the South African Olympic swimming team, available to stream.

WIDOW CLICQUOT – AT CINEMAS

Widow Clicquot tells the true story behind the famous Champagne brand that captivated the world. At the end of the 18th century, Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin marries into the Clicquot winemaking family and then sets about revolutionising the Champagne industry, fighting her way through business, politics and patriarchy. Starring Haley Bennett, Tom Sturridge, Paul Rhys and many more, the film is a moving portrayal of how a legacy was born in the heart of Champagne.

BORDERLANDS – AT CINEMAS AND ON IMAX

Chaos loves company in Borderlands, based on the popular video game franchise of the same name. An infamous bounty hunter reluctantly returns to her home Pandora, the most chaotic planet in the galaxy, and forms an unexpected alliance with a ragtag bunch of misfits united in a quest to uncover some explosive secrets. Directed by Eli Roth (HostelCabin Fever) and starring Cate Blanchett, Ariana Greenblatt, Jamie Lee Curtis and Kevin Hart, the movie delivers an action-packed and bloody, but nevertheless hilarious, cinematic experience.

OUTSIDE LANE – STREAMING ON M-NET

Every four years, the Olympic Games captures the world’s imagination. All eyes are riveted on screens again this year, with particular attention being paid to South Africa’s own elite athletes. Outside Lane, a four-part documentary series streaming on M-Net from August 15, shines a spotlight on the next generation of swimming stars. It shows four South African pool prodigies putting it all on the line in their quest for Olympic success, revealing the sacrifice and mental fortitude required to win big at the Games. The documentary features Tatjana Smith, Ryk Neethling, Penny Heyns and Terence Parkin. With Paris 2024 now drawing to a close, this series is the perfect way to celebrate South Africa’s sporting heroes.
