Siphiwe "General GTZ" Sibisi's passing marks the end of an era in South African Kwaito music, as he was the last surviving member of the pioneering group Chiskop. His death at the age of 49, after a battle with cancer, has deeply saddened fans and the music community.
Chiskop, which formed in 1998, played a pivotal role in shaping the Kwaito genre, a uniquely South African style of music that blends house beats, hip-hop, and local sounds. The group released two impactful albums, Akusheshi (1996) and Relax (1999), contributing to the cultural and musical landscape of post-apartheid South Africa. The group was made up of Siphiwe "General GTZ" Sibisi, Mduduzi Tshabalala (Mandoza), Sibusiso Thanjekwayo (SB Bless), and Sizwe Motaung (Lollipop).
With Sibisi's passing, the Kwaito world bids farewell to the last of the Chiskop legends, as his groupmates SB Bless and Lollipop passed in 2003, and Mandoza in 2016. His legacy lives on through his music and the indelible mark Chiskop left on South African music.
