Nearly 17 months after the passing of her husband Shona Ferguson, Connie recounted her last moments with him and opened up about her journey to healing.

Shona died in July 2021 from complications related to Covid-19, and Connie has been left to pick up the pieces.

In a recent sit-down with Newsroom Afrika, Connie recalled Shona's battle with Covid-19 when he was discharged to recover at home and she nursed him and monitored his oxygen.

The hospital visits that followed saw a recovering Connie, who had also been diagnosed with Covid-19, emotional, sleep deprived, and abstaining from food.

"I think I'm still traumatised from that night after he was discharged from hospital. Because he was strong he put on a front that he was strong enough to come home. That was the longest night of my life. Because I literally had to monitor his oxygen. That night he just got progressively worse. That night I was looking at my husband fading away from me," she said.

The actress and Ferguson Films co-owner, who returned to work six weeks after Shona's passing, said she is still on course to fulfil her promise to keep his legacy alive and has ambitions of her own despite it feeling lonely at times.

"Grieving is ongoing. You just literally learn to live with the pain and not let it decapitate you. Life has to go on. I still have ambitions. I still have a company I need to run. There's a lot still to be done, I think for me its unfortunate that I find myself in a position where I feel like I have to do it alone although I have a lot of support around me. It still feels alone without Sho, but I know he's my biggest angel and I feel him a lot."

At Shona's funeral Connie spoke about being hurt by the thought of having to carry on living without her partner.

“I have never known anyone with your fighting spirit. Even on the hospital bed, you defied the odds so many times. I'm hurting right now, my heart is bleeding.  I was not ready for you to go, the girls were not ready for you to go. When you became sick I don't think we've ever prayed so much in our lives, we prayed and believed God for your healing," she said.

When celebrating what would have marked 21 years of marriage last December, Connie penned a heartfelt note commemorating their union.

“This day 21 years ago. Tomorrow never came for my bestest friend, but I know how much he loved me. There’s a great comfort that comes with that, knowing just how happy you made someone in this lifetime, and how happy they made you. True love never dies, and I carry this love with me in my heart and soul for eternity. Thank you for the beautiful everlasting love and memories my angel Sho,” she wrote.
