Simphiwe Dana has released MOYA, a deeply personal album that comes as a surprise. The album marks a time of change, healing and rediscovery for her. Its release being in January is meaningful, as it’s the birth month of both Simphiwe and her mother, a time to reflect, let go and embrace new beginnings.

Creating MOYA helped me let go of my stoicism,” says Simphiwe. “It made me human again, showing me that feeling your feelings instead of running from them is healthier for your mind and body. I realised I didn’t have to carry all my pain and anger, I could just let go. Releasing MOYA was part of that process.”

The album’s name, MOYA, represents the innocence and wonder of childhood. It reconnects Simphiwe to her spiritual side, guiding her back to balance after years of grief and frustration.

The lead single, “Mayenzeke,” sets the tone for the album. It explores surrender and the desire for spiritual alignment, while showing that healing comes from facing grief, not avoiding it.

When I made MOYA, I was working through my grief at a time when it felt selfish to share it,” Simphiwe explains. “We all lost someone during COVID and were isolated in our sadness. I hope anyone who has felt similar emotions can find comfort, understanding and even healing through this music. You are not alone.

While Simphiwe makes no assumptions about how listeners will experience the project, MOYA is meant to soothe, calm negative emotions and bring a sense of peace, no matter where someone is in their own journey.
